fallacy to think that a lot of information is required before an investigation into one's
ancestors can begin. In many ways it is quite the opposite. Let us take two different kinds
of enquiry to illustrate this. |

He has only a copy of his own birth certificate and a rough idea of when and where his Scottish parents were born. In this case we were able to unearth a mass of hitherto unknown (and interesting) information simply by using Statutory birth, marriage and death certificates. Mr McPhail did not even have to send his birth certificate to us because we were able to inspect the original at New Register House here in Edinburgh, and he was delighted and surprised at the amount of information we were able to find. |

we do need at least a name and a date of birth, marriage or death in Scotland,
preferably after 1855.
